Welcome to My Perfect Accident

When I get asked how I got here I laugh and say it was an “accident” I was “lucky” but that’s actually a cover up…

I’m proud to say I’m one of the only data-driven science-backed consultants that’s supported multiple companies and executives from start up to IPO or from Mom’s basement to Billion dollar evalutions.

Those are not accidents or luck. It’s People and Science.

My approach to life leverages the fact that we are wildly imperfect creatures and we make mistakes but like the wisdom of Viktor Frankl helped me understand. Suffering gives life meaning.

When I look around I see a lot of suffering but not much meaning, my goal is to help people extract the pain of their suffering and step into their purpose.

“if you want to take the island, burn the boats”
— - Julius Caesar

My boats were burned, well done, extra crispy. When I was in my early 20’s life said “this safe path forward to building a practice and having the average isn’t what you’re meant to be doing.” So life gave me a nudge in the right direction, I didn’t listen. Then I got a push, didn’t listen, then the 2x4 to the back of the head happened.

I was 1 year into my doctorate program when life happened. In the series of 3 months, I was hit by a car on my bike and hospitalized, body wrecked. The next hat to fall was the death of my best friend, my father. He had demons we did not know he was suffering with in silence and removed himself from this planet. Devastation is an understatement. I was a wreck. Shortly after the funeral flowers had started to wilt I discovered that I was going to be a father, a single father with no money, no direction, no reason… With just under 3 years left until I could practice I was left afraid, depressed, and anxious and knew something needed to change.

One miracle of unconditional kindness forever changed my life forever in a Waffle House no less. It was a week later that I decided I would get back into business consulting like I had done when I was in high school, however instead of design and systems I would work on company culture and workplace wellness. Using the same skills that I had used to start to save my own life with science I would spread that through the toxic workplace that was contributing to constant anxiety and burnout.

Months of sleepless nights taking care of a newborn, and building a business online with zero adult experience, while also completing my degree, doing clinic, and taking off-campus neuroscience and functional neurology courses. To show all of my effort I had… bags under my eyes, a failed ethics class due to attendance (easiest class on campus), and zero clients.

But I kept going, kept writing, making content, marketing, and cold calling. Over and over and over.

People ask how I became successful and that’s the formula, consistency in your passion. Pave your path to success in failures, self-care, forgiveness, grace and coffee.

Today I’m honored to speak and consult around the planet and connect with a weekly audience of over 2 million. Our podcast “The Healthy Mind F*ck” (available everywhere) is a top 3% podcast 3 years running, another complete accident. We arrived at the top of the mountain by taking a single step every day. Closer to learning to love me and share the most practice science-based self-care skills I possibly could.

Education

I am often asked about my educational background that led me to my current position. Many people might expect a business degree, MBA, medical doctorate, or a Ph.D., but my journey is quite different.

My path towards business began in high school when I had a mentor who recognized my leadership potential and helped me nurture that skill. Together, we turned around a failing business, achieving an impressive 1200% turnaround in just three years. I am forever grateful for this experience as it shaped my passion for supporting company culture, communication, and community, which has been invaluable throughout my life.

After high school, I pursued studies in biology, chemistry, and environmental science at Siena Heights University. Despite facing academic challenges, I was fortunate to have mentors who inspired me to fall in love with science and encouraged my curiosity and questioning.

I then attended Life University, where I obtained my doctorate in chiropractic. However, as a young single father, I realized that a traditional 9-5 practice didn't align with my desired lifestyle of freedom. So, I pursued functional neurology at Carrick Institute, where my love for neuroscience and the brain deepened. Graduating, I found myself living my dream, supporting a small start-up and instilling culture and self-care into its operations.

Driven by my curiosity for neurology, I sought additional training in medical neuroscience from Duke, advanced neuroscience from Peking University, and Neuropsychology of wellness from Stanford. Along the way, I continued my business education and read five neuroscience journals daily to stay updated on the evolving world of neuroscience.

When the pandemic struck, I responded to the call for science-based mental health tips and began sharing self-regulation skills and neuroscience on our social media pages. Our audience grew, and I felt a responsibility to ensure the accuracy of the content I produced. Thus, I sought the guidance of colleagues with expertise in medical neuroscience and related fields to review my work.

Our purpose continues to drive us every day to create videos, articles, and presentations with science-based tools accessible to everyone. We focus on biometric testing to empower our clients with data to measure their progress and foster curiosity and self-care. Empirical data on self-regulation helps us take more informed action and embrace the reality of change.
